LILA (Learning Indian Languages Through Artificial Intelligence) is a milestone in language learning through Artificial Intelligence Technology. LILA, in Sanskrit means 'Play'. Using LILA, learning an Indian language on your PC can indeed be as enjoyable as playing.

LILA HINDI PRAVEEN (Windows Version) is the second in the series of a multimedia based intelligent self-tutoring software package for learning Hindi as a second language. It is a full-length second level Hindi course specially designed for Government and corporate employees, but is also useful to those who wish to learn advanced level Hindi after having acquired the competence, at the initial level in the language or having completed the basic LILA HINDI PRABODH course.

The package can also be used by the teacher as a supplementary aid or companion, thereby drastically reducing the routine task of administering exercises, evaluating them, devising grammatical explanations and narrating the text with standard pronunciation and intonation.

The course is based on the syllabus of the Hindi Praveen course already being conducted through classroom teaching and distance education by the Department of Official Language (DOL), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The package represents the latest in the multimedia language tutoring system and contains a speech and video interface as well as a record and compare facility all integrated into the text. The medium of instruction is English.

The objective of the software is to impart teaching of a comparatively advanced level of Hindi enough to communicate in day to day situations and to equip the learner with a sound base of written Hindi and its core functional grammar. The continuous interactive participation through the computer in the self-learning process is likely to give the user an extra edge in terms of reading, writing, speaking and grammar.

INTERACTIVE LEARNING

Exhaustive interactive exercises with solutions as well as self-evaluation tests with scores have been provided to monitor the student's progress. A student can thus proceed to the next lesson only after having cleared the evaluation test given after each lesson. The package enables learning at one's own pace. So, while fast learners can move on to the next lesson speedily, others can take their own time.

AUDIO-VISUAL AND VIDEO AID

The inbuilt audio-video interface enables the student to listen to and learn the standard pronunciation, and intonation of words and sentences and see them being spoken in the running text. The record and compare device provided in the package allows the student to record a word or sentence in his/her own voice and compare it with the standard pronunciation available in the package. For easy comprehension, every lesson has a movie running alongside the narrative. The sentences spoken in the clippings are highlighted in the text, facilitating correspondence between the text lines and spoken dialogues.
