Exciting
years in C-DAC
Murlidhar
Rao spent 5 exciting years in C-DAC and is presently
the Managing Director of Infoyug.com
If
there is one part of my career that I should
single out as the most exciting part, I would
unhesitatingly pick the 5 years (89-93) spent
at C-DAC. It had a heady mix of challenge, importance
and open environment.
The
environment was charged with highly motivated
people from top to bottom - all committed to
‘make it happen’. The super-computer project
was a very prestigious one of national importance.
There were all kinds of challenges both technical
and administrative and the work demanded a very
high level of commitment. I will always look
back with great pride and satisfaction the experiences
of these 5 years that realised the launching
of the PARAM series of supercomputers.
I
realised at C-DAC that there is no substitute
for dedication and commitment to work. Most
problems can be surmounted if taken up as something
that has to be accomplished. I learnt that theoretical
and bookish knowledge alone is not sufficient
- we need sound application of simple principles
to the problem at hand to find workable solutions
- most importantly we need to believe in ourselves
that we can make it happen. Once we take up
a problem with the attitude of ‘have to find
a solution to this’ - I think half the problem
is already solved. The work environment plays
a major role in bringing out the best in the
people.
We
did learn that commercialising a product involved
coming to grips with the existing hardware and
software systems - all computerized applications
and systems have constantly evolved over the
last couple of decades and there is an environment
for any type of work, for example standard libraries,
GUIs, protocols, programming paradigms etc.
C-DAC needs to partner with strong players in
these areas to market a product that meshes
well with or supports these existing subsystems.
