illustrates why and how.
Ancient
wisdom and modern information technology together
have resulted in LILA, a new virtual way of
learning Indian languages.
Web-LILA
(Learn Indian Languages through Artificial Intelligence)
is a milestone project in language learning
that opens new vistas for netizens across the
globe. Indbazaar.com and C-DAC are all set to
launch the Web Version of LILA-Hindi, which
will evolve a new idiom of language learning
on the net. Learning a language will be so much
easier and exciting. A click of the mouse on
the Internet will do the trick. This will add
a new dimension to the concept of Indian Language
Learning/Teaching, making language learning
more systematic and simpler.
The
Applied Artificial Intelligence Group (AAI)
of C-DAC had already developed the LILA-Hindi-Prabodh
Compact Discs which were launched by the Hon'ble
President of India on September 14, 1999 to
commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Hindi as the
Official Language of the country. The other
two CD versions of the packages of LILA-Hindi-Praveen
and Pragya will be launched soon. These projects
were sponsored by Department of Official Language
(DOL), Ministry of Home Affairs.
Indbazaar.com,
a leading Indian family portal, offers a range
of services like education, finance, fashion,
travel and shopping. It is an umbrella site,
which encompasses portals and a range of interactive
and contributory sites to touch all aspects
of modern life. Web-LILA will become a part
of the Online Language Learning section of the
indbazaar site.
Web-LILA
is highly interactive, attractively presented
and extremely user friendly. A considerable
amount of technical and designing expertise
has gone into it to involve users in the process
of learning. Presently available as a series
of multimedia based self-tutoring packages,
LILA imparts fundamental as well as advanced
functional knowledge of Hindi. Drawing from
situations in real-life, it offers the user
various tools to master a language. There are
stimulating graphics and clear directions for
a user to employ different learning tools effectively.
For
beginners, it comprises alphabet writing and
reading apart from an online dictionary. One
can access a vocabulary of symbols and images
from day-to-day life like birds, animals, fruits,
nature, seasons, months and relationships. The
memory game and exhaustive exercises will fine-tune
language skills in this first phase of learning.
The
second phase of learning involves a full-length
second level Hindi course with graded lessons.
This segment of the Web version is helpful for
learners of advanced level Hindi.
The
most effective feature of the package will be
easier and faster audio-video streaming of the
content on the web to make learning a pleasant
and memorable and novel experience The online
language tutor will be available on Broadband
Internet Connectivity as well as on 56 kbps
modem. It caters to users with varying levels
of skills. The content is arranged to offer
basic knowledge for those starting from scratch
and satisfies the requirements of advanced learners
as well.
The
online human teacher will be available to solve
problems, assess evaluation and suggest remedial
actions. The test papers include, apart from
the normal objective type and fill-in-the-blank
type of questions, some descriptive type of
questions too, which are evaluated by the counselor
and provides a virtual classroom simulation.
