Centre
for e-Governance Inaugurated
Shri
Pramod Mahajan, Hon’ble Minister of Parliamentary Affairs
and Information Technology and Shri Arun Shourie, Hon’ble
Minister of State of Disinvestment and Administrative Reforms
& Public Grievances inaugurated the Centre for e-Governance
at Electronics Niketan, Department of Information Technology
recently.
Promoted by the Department of Information Technology and managed by C-DAC, the Center
aims at showcasing the best practices in the area of e-Governance,
conduct programmes to create awareness amongst decision
makers in the Central and State Governments, demonstrate
the feasibility of the concept of e-Governance and assist
the Central and State Governments in defining and implementing
policy and process changes.
On the occasion,
Shri Prabhat Kumar, Cabinet Secretary released the brochure
outlining the activities of the Centre. Shri B. B. Tandon,
Secretary, Dept. of Personnel and Training, Ministry of
Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension, also released
a multimedia CD installed at a kiosk at the Centre describing
the activities of the Centre.
e-Governance Solutions
for Maharashtra
Government from C-DAC
His Excellency, Dr.
P.C. Alexander, Governor of Maharashtra inaugurated the
computerization project of the Registration Department at
the Sub-Registrar Haveli 1 Office, at Pune with the implementation
of the SARITA software.
As a turnkey solution
provider for the State Government of Maharashtra, C-DAC
has been entrusted with the task of developing specific
e-Governance solutions for the Public Works Department,
Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, Legislative
Assembly and Council and the Department of Archives and
Registration. One of the e-Governance solutions developed
by C-DAC is for stamp registration computerization for the
State and includes a software package called Stamp and Registration
with Information Technology and Administration (SARITA).
The SARITA software is presently being installed at the
different offices of the Inspector General of Registration
in the state.
C-DAC has also offered
to computerise registration operations in the states of
Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
PARAM 10000 installed
at IISc Bangalore and IIT, Guwahati
An
8 Node PARAM 10000 was installed at the Supercomputering
Education and Research Centre at the Indian Institute of
Science (IISc), Bangalore and IIT Guwahati recently.
A Workshop was also
conducted by C-DAC at these institutions to initiate close
interaction with researchers in the Institutes and to familiarize
them with the optimal usage of PARAM 10000.
The processing nodes
of PARAM 10000 are UltraSPARC II and are connected using
the PARAMNet. The system will be used by different Applications
Depar-tments like Atmospheric Sciences, Mechanical, Structural,
Aerospace, Computer Science as well as Physics, Chemistry
and Mathematics.
Atmaram Puraskar
for Prof. Suraj Bhan Singh
Prof.
Suraj Bhan Singh, Advisor in C-DAC, has received the
Atmaram Award from the Hon’ble President of India
Shri. K.R. Narayanan for his Outstanding Contribution
to Language Technology and Technical Writing in Indian Languages
on 19th May 2000 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. An eminent
computational linguist and educationist of national and
international repute, Prof. Singh has been closely associated
with the C-DAC’s Applied Artificial Intelligence
Group in various projects like MANTRA (Machine assisted
Translation Tool) and LILA (Learn Indian Languages
through Artificial Intelligence) Hindi tutoring software
series, and various other computational linguistic programmes.

Computing Applications In Bioinformatics’
‘Having
missed the opportunity to contribute to the first draft
of the Human Genome that was announced recently, India should
now concentrate on preparing a Gene Plan and participate
in the research for tracking the disease causing genes.’
observed Dr. J R Arora, Advisor, Department of Biotechnology,
Government of India, New Delhi. He was delivering the
inaugural address at the workshop on ‘High Performance Computing
Applications In Bioinformatics’ organized by C-DAC in Pune
recently.
Elaborating further,
Dr. Arora emphasized on the role of C-DAC in addressing
the problems and issues in the areas of Data Warehousing,
Sequencing applications, Computing Engine for Genomic Sequences
and Data mining for Bioinformatics.
Dr P B Vidyasagar,
Director, Bioinformatics Centre of the University of Pune
in his Presidential address expressed the need for C-DAC
and the Bioinformatics Center with the Pune University to
come together to set up an institute of Bioinformatics,
which could conduct courses and train students in this specialized
field.
Speaking on the occasion,
Shri R K Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC, elaborated
on the role of C-DAC in the field of Bioinformatics and
the High Performance Computing applications developed on
PARAM for this purpose.
Advanced Techniques
In Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
The
workshop organised by C-DAC, from August 07 10, 2000, covered
a range of subjects discussed through classroom and practical
sessions, such as Map projections, GIS data models and structures,
Data capture into GIS, Visualization of spatial data, Query,
Analysis, Modeling in GIS, GIS and Data Warehousing, Web
GIS, Digital cartography, Customized GIS and Introduction
to Remote Sensing and Image Processing.
Solaris System Administration
A Solaris System Administration
workshop was conducted by C-DAC from August 22 to 25, 2000.
Professional System Administrators representing software
development firms, Internet Solution Providers, academic
and third party Service Providers participated in the workshop.
The workshop conducted hands on sessions covering hardware
like Solaris Machines including Sun Enterprise - 450, Sun
Enterprise - 250, Sun Ultra - 10, Sun Super Sparc - 20 &
Intel platforms.
GIST bags export
order for LIPS
C-DAC’s GIST bagged
its first export order for the supply of the LIPS Advanced
Creation station from an organisation in the UK for the
installation of the system in Mauritius.
