Overview
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the premier R&D organization under the Union Ministry of Communications and IT in association with Assam Engineering College is organizing 3rd National Symposium on "HPC in Academia & Beyond".
The 3rd National Symposium on "HPC in Academia & Beyond”, first of its kind national initiative in High Performance Computing for Scientific, Academic and Engineering institutes in the North East region, is scheduled to be held at Assam Engineering College, Guwahati, Assam on August 06, 2011.
Shri Janaki Ballav Patnaik, Hon'ble Governor of Assam will be inaugurating the 3rd National Symposium as Chief Guest.
The symposium is primarily aimed at creating awareness of High Performance Computing (HPC) and its potential benefits in the Scientific, Academic and Engineering segments. Its goal is to stimulate large-scale national discourses to accelerate adoption of educational tools and curriculum that reflect increasing role of high performance computational methods in engineering and science. The technical sessions by expert speakers in various research domains will provide a perfect incubation platform for our future engineers and scientists to indulge in advance research using HPC.
The symposium will be attended by a large number of scientists, engineers, faculty members and students from various parts of Assam and nearby states.
Hence it will provide a platform for networking amongst industry experts, professors, research scholars and students to work in multi disciplinary areas of science and engineering, using HPC tools and technologies. Application of IT continues to transform the world around us. Sustaining these developments requires renewed attention to innovative techniques.
HPC is a powerful tool in the hands of researchers to innovate in their respective domains. Students, who are nation’s future researchers, need to know how to effectively use this tool. Hence it is our duty to provide HPC systems in academic institutions clubbed with HPC education programmes in our academic curriculum.
The most important resource for advancement of any technology area is the manpower resource. Hence, in addition to building HPC systems and solutions, the nation also needs to build HPC manpower for advancement of HPC technologies.
Such approaches are necessary to educate a larger and more diverse population of well-skilled, knowledgeable, and innovative people who will significantly advance scientific discovery in all fields of study, now and well into the future.
In order to inculcate HPC at the grass root level, C-DAC has specially designed an integrated package titled "ONAMA" for premier engineering institutions to proliferate HPC into the educational curriculum at the nascent stage, thereby promoting high-end research at academic level. We look forward to series of such deployments benefitting our Education and Research segment in the state of Assam and other Eastern and North Eastern states of India.

About ONAMA
ONAMA is an integrated package comprising of a judiciously selected set of parallel and serial applications and libraries across various scientific and engineering disciplines such as Computer Science, Mechanical, Electronics & Communication, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, Life Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, etc. Besides, it consists of a number of Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) enabled applications in several domains such as molecular dynamics and physics. It, therefore provides tools that have close affinity with practical simulations, hence making the process of learning the use and application of HPC technologies to various domains much easier. Most of the tools and applications are GUI based, thereby reducing the learning curve.
ONAMA provides access to various APIs from several libraries viz. parallel libraries, performance libraries, engineering domain specific libraries that can be used to develop programs to solve problems. It provides an intuitive GUI based installation utility that allows installation of desired applications with just a few mouse clicks.
The first deployment of ONAMA has been done at Kashibai Navale college of Engineering, Pune in Maharastra.
