About the Symposium
What?
The Symposium on Medical Informatics Standards in Indian Context is to promote the use and adoption of Medical Informatics Standards by bringing together academic, service, and industry sectors of healthcare domain. Eminent personalities from industry and medical domain will discuss need, efforts, issues, roadmap, and more on the medical informatics standards in medical applications / devices.
On the same occasion, C-DAC's Medical Informatics Standards Software Development Kits will be previewed with launch of public beta program for all OEM and ISV. The areas in healthcare domain where the medical informatics standards can be used will be demonstrated in the technical session of the symposium.
Why?
The healthcare domain in its entirety consists of multiple terminologies, methods, and numerous records keeping systems. Over time these medical systems have become more complex and sophisticated. With the addition of medico-legal requirements it has become a necessity to ensure that systems communicate in a defined manner and are interoperable with each other. Such requirements can only be met with the implementation of medical standards defined by International / National medical and legal organizations.
India being a large country with a population of more than a billion people, effective reach of healthcare in a cost effective manner is of prime importance. It is extremely important that healthcare systems follow laid down procedures and standards for effective delivery. Medical Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Independent Software Vendors (ISV) are a critical part of the healthcare delivery chain. There are many systems implementing a gamut of technologies available from such manufacturers. It has been observed worldwide that these systems being proprietary, data exchange and communication between them is a major problem thus pushing up cost of healthcare delivery.
There are a very few applications / tools and knowledge available in the industry in India adhering to established Medical Informatics Standards due of their inherent complexities and enormity. Cost is also a major factor as most of the present offerings of Medical Informatics Standards are non-indigenous products with expensive development and distribution royalties. Keeping in view the recommendations of National Task Force on Telemedicine Standards, a huge need for such an indigenous technology is expected to come up in a short time span.
Target audience
-
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) who are involved in the manufacturing of devices like CT, X-Ray, Nuclear Medicine, MRI, Ultrasound, ECG, Radiotherapy, Digital Microscopes, film scanners used in the medical field because vendors require software applications which adhere to medical informatics standards.
-
Multiple Independent Software Vendors (ISV) who build applications which interact with other DICOM and HL7 compliant systems like PACS server, Hospital Information Systems (HIS) because complexity of these standards makes it is difficult to understand and implement them in software applications / devices.
About Medical Informatics Group
Medical Informatics Group (MIG) is a part of C-DAC which is a premier R&D organization of the Government of India. MIG's activities are concentrated towards providing customized solutions to bridge the gaps in communication in healthcare, while taking care of the available infrastructure in the country.
MIG is involved in R&D leading to multiple products in the Telemedicine field. Also one of the major thrust areas of MIG is towards building application and products which assist other entities/organizations in implementing Medical Standards in their products. MIG also provides consultancy in setting up health care solutions in hospitals and clinics.

C-DAC's Medical Informatics Standards SDK Suite
Designed and built under research and development grant from Department of Electronics and Information Technology of Ministry of IT and Communication, Government of India, the HL7 and DICOM SDK from C-DAC meet almost all features of any other similar products. The feature set of C-DAC's MI SDK are most comprehensive. Moreover, it has some unique features that are over and above other such products; like low cost, designed/built as API set, available on both Java and .Net platforms, comprehensive coverage, optimizations for low memory and storage profile, leverages platform's multi-core / multiprocessing capabilities. As it is an API and not an application, it can be used to build any application / exchange / gateway that may require standard compliance.
