The
European Commission (EC) launched the Asia Information Technology
& Communication Program (Asia
IT & C) in 1999 to strengthen the technological and
economic relationship between European and Asian countries.
As a part of this initiative, Centre for Development of
Advanced Computing (C-DAC)
India in association with Maison
des Sciences de l'Homme France and Asociación
de Industrias de las Tecnologías Electrónicas y de la Información
del País Vasco, GAIA Spain are jointly working on a
project titled "Indian Language Communication Tools".
The objective of IEMCT
was to present, discuss and explore the latest advancements
in the emerging field of Multilingual Communication Technologies
and its potential future directions. The key focus areas
of the conference were Optical Character Recognition, Speech
Technologies and Internet Tools for content creation and
its retrieval in South Asian and European languages.
IEMCT targeted those involved
in the research, development, deployment or use of Language
Technology and Tools. These included software engineers,
linguists, font designers, graphic designers, content developers,
technical writers, product marketing personnel and students
in the relevant fields. The participants were exposed to
the latest R&D in Europe and Asia, related to the multilingual
tools and technologies. The participants also got an opportunity
to interact with prominent scientists and developers working
in these fields.
