Panini is the
earliest extant descriptive grammar. Panini is the earliest
extant descriptive grammar of Sanskrit as currently
spoken during his time. His extra ordinary perception
of linguistic facts covered, however, a wider region,
since he only not refers to the earliest stage of the
language as occurring in the Vedic literature, but also
spread over the northern and eastern part of India whose
regional variant he also noticed in his majestic sweep.

as well as an independent science.
Mimamsa
The word Mimamsa is derived from ‘mama’ meaning ‘determination,
measure’. It is one of the six systems of Hindu philosophy.
The first and oldest is the ‘Vaiseshika’ Of Kanada who
is the first to start the atomic theory of criterion.
His system contains both the mental and natural philosophies.
Mimamsa is a science of judicial interpretation of the
sacrificial portion (Karma Kanda) of the Veda just as
Vedangas is that of JnanaKanda. It is exegesis or science
of interpretation. It is distinguishable on hand from
the’ Kalpa Sutra’ which is purely deals with complicated
procedure of sacrificial rites and ceremonies and on
the other from Nirukta which explains the vedic word
and their bearing on the vedic text. The Mimamsa thus
partakes of the nature of both of them as it undertakes
to the interpret the Vedic words and describe the ceremonies
in connection with them. It is both philosophy and logic
and sina-qua-non for the study of the sacrificial portion
of the Veda.
