C-DAC launches High Performance Computing Resource Management Engine Portal "CHReME"
Thiruvananthapuram, June 16, 2009
Certified Workshop on "High Performance Computing and Multicore Programming"
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) launched its High Performance Computing Resource Management Engine (CHReME) portal developed by its High Performance Computing Solutions (HPCS) Group in Thiruvananthapuram, today. CHReME is a web-based portal that empowers users with intuitive Graphical user interface and provides easy usage as well as management of resources of HPC systems.
Speaking after inaugurating the portal, Shri Rajan Joseph, Director General, C-DAC said "the arena of supercomputing or high performance computing is growing rapidly, and countrywide there is a huge influx of HPC users demanding rapid growth with more processing power and storage resources. The adoption of HPC by users is enhancing the quality of research and can be accelerated if the proliferation is right at the education stage to the masses. HPC has a great potential in the research and innovation aspect to address grand challenge problems as well as in commercial businesses. Moreover from the cost perspective, due to commodity components, the ownership of cluster is no more prohibitive."
The first full fledged deployment of CHReME will be at one of the most prestigious organizations in the field of weather forecasting - National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Noida. Beta versions of the product have been earlier installed at PARAM Sheersh, NEHU, Shillong and PARAM Gen, NEIST Jorhat. Dr. A K Bohra, Head, NCMRWF graced the occasion and formally accepted the product from Shri Rajan Joseph, Director General, C-DAC. He also stressed the need for more such initiatives to ensure scientists are able to effectively use such tools for improved accuracy in research outputs in production grade environments.
C-DAC is also conducting a Certified Workshop on High Performance Computing and Multicore Programming during June 16-19, 2009. The workshop was inaugurated today at the same event by Shri Rajan Joseph, Director General, C-DAC. Shri Ravindra Kumar, Senior Director, C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram & Executive Director of C-DAC, Kolkata also graced the occasion. Shri Goldi Misra, Group Coordinator & Head, HPC Solutions Group, C-DAC, Pune delivered the welcome address and spoke on the relevance of the workshop and the HPC Portal in line with the theme of the event "High Performance Computing for Masses".
CHReME is fully customizable according to the user requirements and can be deployed for any of the scientific domains. "Various administrative functionalities like Queue Management, Host Management, Compiler & Libraries Configuration etc, can be easily achieved with CHReME. The portal will facilitate the scientific communities to concentrate more on their domain research rather than getting into the complexities of executing their applications codes and optimization of various runs" said Shri Goldi Misra, Group Coordinator & Head, HPC Solutions Group of C-DAC. He further added that there is an industry wide effort for creating, optimizing software & application codes for multicore machines.
The workshop aims to give an insight in High Performance Computing and Multicore Programming for solving grand challenge problems in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Seismic, Meteorology, Climatology, Space Research, Structural Mechanics, Astro Physics & Astronomy, Materials Modeling, Fluid Dynamics, Automotive, Aerospace Engineering, Pharma, Media & Entertainment, Healthcare etc. It includes theoretical, as well as, practical sessions to enable the participants to solve their domain related application codes, in an independent way.
As part of its HPC initiatives, C-DAC will also be starting its regional office for South Indian operations at Kochi. The branch office at Cochin will be a pivotal center for addressing the HPC requirements in and around Kerala. The activities at the center shall include design & deployment of HPC facilities, Porting and Parallelizing of Scientific & Enterprise applications, Training & Workshops on Parallel and Multicore programming etc.
