Centre for Development
of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)
today launched LEAP
Mail that would allow sending and receiving eMails
in Indian languages.
C-DAC's GIST (Graphics and Intelligence based Script Technology)
group has developed LEAP Mail to facilitate users to
send, receive and access eMail directly, and not necessarily
as an attachment text, in the Indian language of their
choice, C-DAC Executive Director Shri. R.K. Arora told a press conference here.
LEAP Mail aids 11 Indian
languages - Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada,
Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjab, Tamil and Telugu
- besides English and supports an Indian language interface
as well.
A language sensitive
multilingual editor makes it easy to combine English
and Indian language text. With LEAP Mail, the users
can send and receive eMail messages in Indian languages
using any POP eMail account. Moreover it can be configured
to access various accounts created on various web-based
services.
The development of
LEAP Mail is a significant milestone in the field of
Indian languages' web based solutions. With LEAP Mail
the language barrier amidst the Indians world over has
reduced further and users can convey effectively their
personal as well as professional communique in the Indian
language of their choice, Arora said.
LEAP Mail is thus another
of C-DAC's pivotal contribution to the language technology
domain, he said.
LEAP Mail is configured
to be used as a standalone eMail client or as a companion
to existing eMail software like Outlook Express, Netscape
Messenger, Eudora and others.
