Sending and receiving
eMail in Kannada will now become easier. The Centre
for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC),
Government of India, has launched LEAP
Mail, a versatile solution for eMail in Indian languages.
C-DAC's Graphics and
Intelligence-based Script Technology (GIST)
group has developed LEAP Mail to facilitate users send,
receive, and access eMail directly, and not necessarily
as an attachment text, in Indian languages.
LEAP Mail aids 11 Indian
languages, including Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu,
besides English, and also supports an Indian language
interface.
A language-sensitive
multilingual editor makes it easy to combine English
and Indian language text.
With LEAP
Mail, users can send and receive eMail messages
in Indian languages using any POP eMail account. It
can be used to access various accounts created on various
web-based services.
According to the Executive
Director of C-DAC, Shri.
R.K. Arora, "the development of LEAP Mail reduces
further the language barrier among Indians the world
over and users can effectively convey their personal
and professional communications in the language of their
choice".
LEAP Mail is configured
as a standalone eMail client or as a companion to existing
eMail software like Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger,
Eudora, and others.
It is designed to be
very user-friendly.
The installation process
is simple. Onscreen keyboard and typing assistance for
all languages is provided. Beginners can write messages
by clicking in the characters displayed on the onscreen
keyboard.
The user can employ
the English keyboard to write messages in Indian languages.
All that is required is to type the word as it is spoken,
using English characters.
A carefully designed
graphic user interface enables users to easily interact
with the software screens in the language of their choice.
LEAP Mail is provided
with features that allow the user utilize the software
to its potential, such as to send and view information
in HTML, maintain a log of received mail for viewing
offline and multiple keyboard support.
