C-DAC announces Web Version of Dnyaneshwari

Pune, May 10, 2002

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), unveiled the web version of Dnyaneshwari and the CD volumes of Dnyaneshwari and Bhagavad-Gita on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Shri Sakhare Maharaj of Alandi, today

C-DAC's National Multimedia Resource Centre (NMRC) has developed a software template, using which the entire content of Dnyaneshwari and Bhagavad-Gita is hosted on the web. The Dnyaneshwari, written by Saint Dnyaneshwar, is one of the most profound commentaries on the Bhagavad-Gita in Prakrit Marathi, an old form of Marathi. The Web version of Dnyaneshwari is accessible at http://indianheritage.cdac.in. The Multimedia CDs and the Web version of Dnyaneshwari are presented entirely in Marathi with exclusively designed fonts.

The entire content of Dnyaneshwari and Bhagavad-Gita is distributed over 2 CD volumes. These CDs include translation and musical recitation with the precise pronunciations of Marathi and Sanskrit Verses. The users are simultaneously able to read the text and listen to the recitation of verses of every page of the Dnyaneshwari and Bhagavad-Gita. It is also possible to browse through Bhagavad-Gita and Dnyaneshwari in a selective or integrated manner and the user can directly move to any Chapter, Shloka or Ovi.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri. R.K. Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC said, "By hosting the Dnyaneshwari on the web, a large segment of users can now access the rich contents of this great commentary in an attractive, user friendly format".

NMRC has been working over the last two years on this development. This mammoth task was undertaken by C-DAC under the Digital Library for Indian Heritage Project sponsored by the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Govt. of India.

C-DAC's NMRC is a harbor of technical and creative expertise, tools and libraries, training resource and multimedia reference archives.
