Centre for Development
of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)
and Department of Environmental Science, University
of Pune, jointly organized a Brainstorming
Workshop on Environmental Computing on May 21, 2002
at the C-DAC Auditorium.
The workshop provided
a forum to discuss the scope of information technology
in environmental analysis and management & control.
Experts displayed the potential of the Geographical
Information System (GIS),
Decision Support System (DSS)
and Computational Air Quality Modeling to tackle the
air, water and noise pollution issues.
The workshop also emphasized
the need to develop real life computer based solutions
in urban planning and policy making, industrial pollution
control and audits. During the workshop scientists from
C-DAC and the Department of Environmental Science expressed
their intention to provide the citizens through the
Internet the computing facility at C-DAC and the scientific
and legal information related to environment.
This information system
will serve in creating awareness regarding the key environmental
issues and conservation of environment. In addition,
the system will assist Government officials and NGOs
in implementing pollution control strategies cost effectively.
Experts from C-DAC,
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal
Corporation (PCMC), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board,
BAIF, National Environment Engineering Research Institute
(NEERI) and Environmental Scientists from Pune University
participated in this day-long workshop.
