Pune, June 19, 2002
Centre for Development
of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)
India in association with Maison
des Sciences de l'Homme (MSH) France and Asociación
de Industrias de las Tecnologías Electrónicas
y de la Información del País Vasco (GAIA), Spain is jointly organizing the Indo-European
Conference on Multilingual Communication Technologies
(IEMCT)
in Pune during June 24 - 25, 2002 at the Pride Hotel
as part of an ongoing project under Asia ITC Programme
of the European Commission. The objective is to provide
a forum for a comprehensive insight on the latest advancements
in the emerging field of Multilingual Computing and
Communication Technologies and its potential future
directions. The key focus areas of the conference are
Optical Character Recognition, Speech Technologies and
Internet Tools for content creation and its retrieval
in South Asian and European languages.
The conference is targeted
at those involved in the research, development, deployment
or use of Language Technology and Tools. These include
software engineers, linguists, font designers, graphic
designers, publishers, content developers, technical
writers, product marketing personnel and students in
the relevant fields. The participants will be exposed
to the latest R&D in Europe and India, related to
the multilingual tools and technologies. The participants
will also get an opportunity to interact with prominent
scientists and developers working in these fields.
According to Shri.
R.K. Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC, "IEMCT is an attempt by C-DAC to bring together the Multilingual
technology experts from Europe and India on a common
forum to present, discuss and explore the state of affairs
in the Language Technology arena. The diversity in the
Languages spoken in these regions presents challenges
to the experts to develop technologies that are universally
applicable and deployable. IEMCT is a step forward in
that direction."
According to Mr. Jokin
Garatea, Associate, "IEMCT will contribute to generate
a frame of confidence and share knowledge amongst those
working in the related field and will lead to new cooperation
opportunities between European and Indian institutions
in the Information and Communications Technologies sector".
IEMCT is another of
C-DAC's significant initiative to emphasize the use
of Multilingual Technology in the filed of IT. C-DAC
has been at the forefront in extending the benefits
of Information Technology to the vast and diversified
multilingual population of India. C-DAC's popular Graphics
and Intelligence based Script Technology (GIST)
facilitates the use of Indian languages in IT. Use of
the GIST range of software and hardware products has
led to the proliferation of the use of computers and
their applications in all major Indian languages, with
hundreds of thousand of users countrywide.
The conference will
be inaugurated on June 24 by Shri. Rajeeva Ratna Shah
Secretary, Dept. of Information Technology, Govt. of
India. Dr. S. Ramani, Director, HP Labs India will deliver
the keynote address. Dr. Augustin de Benoist, Coordinator
