As many as twenty
four leading pharmaceutical, agricultural and biotechnology
related organizations participated in a day long Industry
Meet on Bioinformatics hosted by the Bioinformatics Team of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing
(C-DAC)
on March 08, 2002.
The objective
of the Industry Meet was to provide an insight into
the potential of High Performance Computing in Bioinformatics.
The meet also provided a forum to discuss the computing
requirements for biotechnology and Bioinformatics.
Inaugurating
the meet Shri R.K. Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC
said that C-DAC with its expertise in both High Performance
Computing and Bioinformatics could play a major role
in providing support to the Indian pharma industry in
escalating the speed of drug discovery process. Shri
Subhash Kapre, Executive Director, Serum Institute of
India gave his opening remarks.
Participants
from Serum Institute of India, Helixense Pvt. Ltd.,
Jubilant Biosys, Dr. Reddy's Lab, Confederation of Indian
Industries (CII) Frontier Life Sciences, Emcure, Patni
Computer Systems, Mahindra British Telecom, Persistent
Systems and other organizations were given a perspective
of the cutting edge area in bioinformatics and the activities
of the Bioinformatics team of C-DAC.
The Bioinformatics
team of C-DAC is involved in diverse activities. Its
expertise lies in the area of Molecular Modeling, Genome
Sequence Analysis and Genetic Algorithms. The team is
also in the process of expanding its activities to other
areas of Bioinformatics. C-DAC is amongst the few organizations
in India that supports R&D in Bioinformatics.
Recently, C-DAC
was in news for initiating collaborations with various
Indian and foreign pharma companies. C-DAC is planning
to invest a substantial amount over the next one year
for new development activities using software tools.
