'Having
missed the opportunity to contribute to the first draft
of the Human Genome that was announced recently, India
should now concentrate on preparing a Gene Plan and
participate in the research for tracking the disease
causing genes.' observed
Dr. J.R. Arora, Advisor, Department of Biotechnology,
New Delhi. He was delivering the inaugural address at
the workshop on 'High Performance Computing Applications
In Bioinformatics' organized by The Centre For Development
of Advanced Computing (C-DAC)

Elaborating further,
Dr. Arora emphasized on the role of C-DAC in addressing
the problems and issues in the areas of Data
Warehousing, Sequencing applications, Computing
Engine for Genomic Sequences and Data mining for Bioinformatics
and added that opportunities in India were conducive
to this kind of research as the infrastructure was in
place and trained manpower was available. The workshop
was being conducted at the most opportune time, following
the announcement of the first draft of the human genome,
he added.
Dr. P.B. Vidyasagar,
Director, Bioinformatics Centre of the University of
