   C-DAC conducts Workshop on Advanced Techniques in GIS  
 

Pune, Aug 11, 2000

A five day workshop on Advanced Techniques In Geographic Information Systems (GIS), was conducted by C-DAC from August 7-11, 2000. Elaborating on the 'Role of Geographic Information Systems in Urban Planning' Shri. Pramod Kale, Executive Director, Global Wireless Technology, Pune, in his inaugural address, disclosed the sources of information, interactions required in urban planning, GIS capabilities and applications for urban planning, disaster management, simulation and modeling and future challenges using examples of the use of GIS for the implementation of various projects at SAC Ahmedabad, MMRDA Mumbai and other locations.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri. R.K. Arora, Executive Director C-DAC, informed that C-DAC plans to conduct full-fledged courses on GIS in the near future.

Dr. Ashok Kaushal, Group Coordinator Geomatics, elaborated on the scope of advanced techniques in GIS against the recent advances in information technologies (IT) including Internet, Data Warehouse (DWH) and Open standards through Open GIS Consortium (OGC).

Guest Speaker Mr Raghava Murthy, Deputy Project Director (Systems), IRS-P5 delivered a talk on the 'First Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (CartoSat-I) for large scale mapping from space.

The workshop covered a range of subjects discussed through classroom and practical sessions, such as Map projections, GIS data models and structures, Data capture into GIS, Visualization of spatial data, Query, Analysis, Modeling in GIS, GIS and Data Warehousing, Web GIS, Digital cartography, Customized GIS and Introduction to Remote Sensing and Image Processing.

Participants included scientists, software professionals, cartographers, Government officials, architects, oceanographers, planners, foresters, professors and students from across the country.
