C-DAC organizes "Genetic Algorithms in Bioinformatics" Workshop

Pune , August 06, 2002

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), is organizing a one day workshop, on "Genetic Algorithms in Bioinformatics" on August 16, 2002.

Aimed at Decision-makers/Managers, Bioinformatics scientists, Executives from R&D Organizations, Pharmaceutical industries and all those interested in Bioinformatics comprising, Software professionals, faculty members, research scholars and students, the workshop will provide a platform to cross-disseminate the latest developments in this area. The workshop will also stimulate the development of specialized techniques, keeping in mind the need of industrial applications, and foster new collaborations among academic and industry researchers having a similar or complementary background.

Commenting on the timeliness of the workshop, Shri. R.K. Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC said, "Genetic Algorithms (GA) can provide key solutions to the new challenges posed by the progressive transformation of biology into a data-intensive science. The important areas in which GA are particularly applicable include, prediction of protein's structure and function, semiautomatic drug design, sequence analysis and knowledge acquisition from genetic data". The workshop will mainly focus on these issues.

C-DAC's Bioinformatics team is active in the areas of genome analysis, molecular modeling and algorithm development. The team has also developed problem-solving environments that provide an easy and user-friendly interface to access parallel molecular modeling and genome sequence analysis codes on PARAM 10000, which are needed for life sciences research.

As part of its own research C-DAC has applied Genetic Algorithms to important Bioinformatics issues such as Multiple Sequence Alignment and Protein Structure Prediction.
