India would launch a One-teraflop supercomputer on December 16 and establish an Information-grid for a Ten teraflop processing speed on networked basis, a top government official said today. "C-DAC is going to launch its first one teraflop machine on December 16," Communications and Information Technology Secretary Shri. Rajeeva Ratna Shah told reporters here.

The government would establish an Information Grid (I-Grid), under a Rs. 130-crore project, for which the ministry has already given in-principle approval.

"I-grid would establish a Ten teraflop processing speed on networked basis," Mr. Shah said after inaugurating the Tie conference, organized as part of Bangalore IT.Com 2002. "It would be possible to access the proposed I-grid from around ten locations-all IITs, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and two other locations," he said. "Each of the users would obtain a processing speed of the same order."
