C-DAC announced the launch of its Multilingual Advanced News Automation System: MANAS, a completely automated and indigenously developed system, at the Broadcast India exhibition here today.

MANAS from C-DAC, GIST is an outcome of the development efforts at C-DAC sponsored in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, Government of India and Doordarshan and is the first of its kind news automation system developed in India.

The entire MANAS comprises of the Multilingual News Editor, News Wire, News Controller, Multilingual Teleprompter, News Character Generator MOVECG 2001, News Betacam Controller, News Admin, News Archival & Search, and Video Browser, as an optional feature.

The various components of MANAS support the diverse activities required for efficient news production, and facilitate news collection, news story preparation, news sequencing, teleprompting, character generation and news archiving.

Shri. R.K. Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC said, "MANAS is going to revolutionize the concept of multilingual automated news production in India. MANAS is the successful outcome of integration and convergence of tools and Multilingual applications developed by the GIST group at C-DAC. With MANAS, C-DAC has created a distinct identity in the field of Multilingual Video and Television production solutions".

C-DAC has over the years evolved the Graphics and Intelligence based Script Technology (GIST) with a view to extend the benefits of Information Technology to the vast and diversified multilingual population of India. GIST facilitates the use of Indian languages in IT. Use of the GIST range of software and hardware products has led to the proliferation of the use of computers and their applications in all major Indian languages, with hundreds of thousand of users countrywide and outside India too. GIST has played an important role in projects of national importance such as the Land Records, The Election I-Card, and Indian Railways Ticketing, to name a few.

Based on this technology, a wide range of products has also been developed for use in the field of video and television. These products not only support multilingual technology, but also facilitate easy, efficient, and speedy production. The products, which are also being displayed at the C-DAC stall at Broadcast India Exhibition 2001, are MOVECG 2001, Multiprompter Pro, LIPS (Language Integrated Programme Subtitles) and C-DAC Video Services.
