   C-DAC's LILA HINDI PRABODH bags CSI Award

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing
(C-DAC) has bagged the Computer Society of India's (CSI), CSI - INFOSYS award for the best SHRINK-WRAPPED Software Product for the Year 2000.

The award is for LILA HINDI PRABODH, an intelligent self-tutoring software for learning Hindi.

Dr. Hemant Darbari, Program Coordinator, Applied Artificial Intelligence Group (AAI), C-DAC received the award at the hands of Prof. C.R. Muthu Krishnan, President CSI, at a ceremony in Kolkata recently.

C-DAC and the Department of Official Language (DOL), Ministry of Home Affairs has developed LILA HINDI PRABODH. LILA HINDI PRABODH is intended for use by all those who would like to learn Hindi through the medium of English including employees in Government organizations, Corporate bodies as also Indians living abroad. It would greatly aid in effective day-to-day communication as well as in official transactions.

LILA HINDI PRABODH contains 37 graded lessons in two CDs and runs on the Windows platform. Every lesson has the input of lesson objectives, structure exposure, narrative text, new vocabulary, word family, grammatical notes, structure practice, interactive exercises and evaluation texts with scores. The software also contains an on-line Hindi-English dictionary. A separate alphabet module has also been provided which enables the learner to familiarize himself with the Devanagari alphabet, mode of writing, words and their pronunciation.

The speech interface provided in the software enables the learner to listen to the standard pronunciation of any narrative text, sentence or word. It also enables the student to record pronunciation and compare it with the standard pronunciation given in the package.

For easy comprehension, every lesson narrative has a video clip running along side the text where, the spoken sentences in the text get highlighted in a different color. A pictorial vocabulary module gives the meaning, picture and pronunciation of common words of certain categories.

LILA HINDI PRABODH is the first in the series of the multimedia based self-tutoring package for learning advanced level Hindi. The second package in the series, LILA Hindi PRAVEEN was recently released in Delhi. The third package, the most advanced in learning Hindi, LILA HINDI PRAGYA is under development.
