   ER&DCI, NCST, CEDTI Mohali merge with C-DAC  
 

Pune, February 10, 2003

The Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Government of India has announced the merger of Electronics Research & Development Centre, India (ER&DCI), National Centre for Software Technology (NCST) and Centre for Electronics Design and Technology, India (CEDTI), Mohali with C-DAC.

The restructured C-DAC will combine the strengths of the merging entities to consolidate the focus on R & D. It is also expected that the merger will offer economies of scale and avoid duplication of work.

According to Shri. R.K. Arora, Executive Director, C-DAC, ' The merger will enable the restructured C-DAC to leverage on the expertise of these societies and further focus and strengthen the R & D efforts. The merged autonomous society is targeted to emerge as a center of excellence of international repute working in advanced information technologies.'

The areas of R & D focus would include High Performance Computing (HPC), Hardware & Embedded systems, Information Security, Digital/BroadBand & Wireless Communication, Networking, IT Applications, Natural Language Processing, Multilingual/Multimedia Technologies, Knowledge Management & Software Engineering, Geomatics and Real Time Systems & Software. 'Training and Education will continue to remain an integral activity of the merged society,' he added. The Society will integrate its R & D, applications development & training to deliver output at optimal levels in this activity.

A National Cyberspace Academy (NCA) is envisaged using a hybrid model of conventional classroom training and modern elearning training to impact high-end courses in the diverse areas of IT.

The merger of the societies into C-DAC came into effect on December 16, 2002.
