From scans to facial recognition, how AI tech is securing new Parliament building

Apart from face scans, other biometric details like the ones given for passport renewals and creation have also been collected from MPs, in case the facial recognition system fails. In that scenario, they will use other methods such as thumbprints or a unique PIN.

To enter the new Parliament building, the government has deployed hi-tech and advanced facial artificial intelligence mechanisms. The Parliament gates will have facial recognition and scanning technology.

The scans of Union ministers, Members of Parliament, and top officials have already been taken to enable the gates to open as soon as they come within six metres of the entrances to the new Parliament building.

Apart from face scans, other biometric details like the ones given for passport renewals and creation have also been collected from MPs, in case the facial recognition system fails. In that scenario, they will use other methods such as thumbprints or a unique PIN.

Smart cards, similar to credit cards, using the Smart Card Operating System for Transport Applications (SCOSTA) will be programmed to allow only categories of personnel with security clearance to access specific areas. This encrypted data is currently being developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Access control will also include cordoning off the Prime Minister’s wing for all except those with PMO clearance. All of this is being integrated into a local navigation system or a mobility app designed especially for the new Parliament building to help people find their way.
